Born 1935 in Leningrad to a working-class family.
1954 — entered Faculty of History of Leningrad State University, served in the seminar of Professor S. Valk, specialized in the Economic History of Russia during the first half of the XIXth century. 1959–1984 — worked at Leningrad Department of History Institute of the USSR Sciences Academy, specializing in the history of Soviet society, specifically the city of Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War and the Russian Revolution of 1917. Since 1986 — Head of the Department of History of Soviet Society (since 1991 – the Department of Modern History of Russia).
1999 — awarded the “Distinguished Figure in Russian Higher Education” honorary degree. 2004 — elected as a Professor Emeritus of Saint Petersburg University. 2007 — awarded the title “Distinguished Science Worker of the Russian Federation”. Professor Gennadiy Sobolev is a founder of a historical school working on the Russian revolutions and the Russian Civil War. Author of more than 300 scientific works including more than 15 monographs and study guides. Awarded the Sign “To The Citizen of Besieged Leningrad;” the “50th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War” (1995) Medal; the “In Commemoration of the 300th Anniversary of Saint Petersburg” (2003) Medal.
