1949 — graduated from Faculty of History, Leningrad State University. 1949–1952 — postgraduate student at Leningrad State University. 1953 — defended his Candidate of History dissertation “American Expansion in the Pacific Ocean Basin in the Middle of the XIX Century”. 1970 — defended Doctor of History dissertation on “Russia and the USA, 1914-1917: An Outline of Russian-American Relations.”
1951–1953 — Lecturer at the Faculty of History, Leningrad State University. 1953–1955 — Teaching Assistant at the Department of History in Leningrad State Library Institute. Since 1955 works at Saint-Petersburg History Institute of the Russian Sciences Academy (prev. Leningrad Department of History Institute of the USSR Sciences Academy). 1955–1963 — Junior Research Associate, 1963–1986 — Senior Research Associate, 1986–1989 — Leading Research Associate, since 1989 — Chief Research Associate at the Department of Modern Russian History. Since 1975 — Member of the Academic Board of the Institute. Since 1980 — Member of the Dissertation Board of the Institute.
Author of more than 300 scientific works concerning the problems of Russian history at the turn of XX century, and the history of Russian-American relations and the USA at the turn of XX century.
